Which one, and when?

Up to about 3 hours

Hammer Gel is an energy gel with no added refined sugar, taken with water; HEED is an electrolyte sports drink with no added sugar, if you'd rather have a flavored drink. Both are equally good choices – it's a matter of taste.

Over 3 hours

For longer efforts, you also need a little protein alongside carbohydrates: that's what Perpetuem is made for, along with its chewable tablet form Perpetuem Solids and Sustained Energy 2.0. Read more: Hammer for Workouts Under and Over 3 Hours.

Solid food and hydration

Hammer Bar is a whole-food energy bar for before training and for steadier-paced efforts; Hammer Phood is a meal replacement drink mix; Liquid Endurance is for pre-loading fluids before races in hot weather.

Why complex carbohydrates?

Hammer energy fuels are built on complex carbohydrates, not simple sugars, so your energy supply is steadier. Read more: Maltodextrin – The Superior Carbohydrate for Endurance Athletes. On hourly calorie intake: Hammer Guide 2 – Calories Count.
